Preventing Human Trafficking & Gender-Based Violence
ICAN is funded by Santa Clara County to provide services that will help prevent human trafficking and gender-based violence in the Vietnamese community through community education and awareness that includes a needs assessment, training staff, other community based organizations, community partners, youth leaders, parent workshops, and community outreach and educational workshops.
WHAT WE DO
The goal of this program is to first reduce gender-based violence in the Vietnamese community through empowering parents on topics such as communication with teens/children, building family structure and tradition, and trauma-informed care to promote healthy family dynamics.
Our next goal was to reduce human trafficking. We incorporated how to stay safe online in our workshops to prevent instances of human trafficking by providing parents and youth with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and others from potentially being online victims.
During the peak of the pandemic, we hosted a variety of youth and parenting workshops as well as community forums that covered these topics and were well received by the community. We plan to host more events such as these in the near future to prevent gender-based violence as well as human trafficking in our community.
WHO WE SERVE
We serve the Vietnamese community in Santa Clara county which is inclusive of youth, parents, and elderly community members.
WHY IT MATTERS
Vietnamese women are at higher risk of falling prey to traffickers and gender-based violence due to the Vietnamese traditional views and expectations of women’s role in the family. The lack of awareness about these issues further puts women at greater risk. With our program, we are able to better inform and educate the community about how to prevent these issues in their lives.
