WHAT IS C.A.R.E. RESEARCH?
ICAN seeks to strengthen the voice of Vietnamese Americans in Alzheimer-related research by participating in The Collaborative Approach for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Research and Education (C.A.R.E.) in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias so that culturally competent strategies and services can be documented to serve Vietnamese communities around the world better.
WHO WE SERVE
We serve all Asian/Pacific Islanders living in California interested in community-based research.
WHAT WE DO
We aim to engage, educate and recruit 10,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (including Vietnamese Americans) into a potential participant registry for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), and other aging-related topics such as mental health. This critical and unprecedented endeavor is led by Dr. Van Ta Park, Associate Professor at UCSF School of Nursing, working in partnership with ICAN and many other AAPI academia, professionals, and community-based organizations throughout California.
WHY IT MATTERS
C.A.R.E. is critical to ensure that AAPI, an underserved population, is meaningfully included in ADRD research. The ultimate goal of the proposed project is to address the gap and reduce disparities in research participation through the creation of an AAPI registry of participants interested in participating in various types of ADRD research.
WHAT ARE OUR DELIVERABLES?
CARE addresses the NIA's Strategic Directions for Research on Aging: Develop and implement strategies to increase inclusion of diverse populations in research.
a) Develop a registry that will facilitate future ADRD research with AAPI
b) Serve as a recruitment model for other populations
c) Increase the capacity of AD Centers/Institutes and develop a new collaborative team at five universities
d) Develop a robust approach and add to the science of recruiting and retaining minorities in research with the overall goal of reducing ADRD disparities.
