WHAT IS ARISE?
ARISE stands for Asian Americans & Racism: Individual and Structural Experiences. ICAN seeks to strengthen the voice of Vietnamese Americans in ARISE, which is a research project aimed at studying the effects of multi-level discrimination on cognitive performance and Alzheimer's Disease biomarkers within the Chinese American, Korean American, and Vietnamese American populations aged 65 years old and older.
WHAT WE DO
Participants are contacted by ARISE staff or can contact ARISE directly and are screened to determine participant eligibility. Then, participation includes completion of an informed consent form, surveys and cognitive assessments, and blood draws.
WHY IT MATTERS
Discrimination has significant negative effects on mental and physical health, produces elevated stress responses, and is linked to unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Additionally, according to the FBI, Anti-Asian racism rose during the pandemic by double from 2019-2020. The pandemic both inflamed and exacerbated long-standing anti-Asian racism. Even so, research among Asian Americans is limited, even though Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial group of older Americans at risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Research plays a crucial role in enhancing our understanding of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias which can lead to improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
WHO WE SERVE
ICAN supports the program in doing outreach for the Vietnamese American community, particularly those in Northern California. It focuses on older adults, ages 65 and up and the study takes place in-person at the UC Davis, UC San Francisco, UC Irvine, or community sites, or remotely as needed.
